Ayahuasca

Botanical Background

Ayahuasca is a jungle vine from the botanical species Banisteriopsis Caapi and is indigenous to the Western Amazon. Ayahuasca is also used interchangeably to refer to the brew that is made from the vine. Ayahuasca’s name is derived from the Quechua language and means the “vine of souls”. However, among Amazon natives Ayahuasca is known as yage, natema and caapi . Ayahuasca contains several neurally active alkaloids, such as beta-carbolines or MAO inhibitors, but the most important of these are harmine and harmaline.

History

Ayahuasca has been used by 72 South American cultures for almost a millennium for healing and divination purposes. A ceremonial cup from the Ecuadorian Amazon culture, for drinking the Ayahuasca potion, is the oldest found Ayahuasca related relic. This item dates back to between 500 BC to 50 AD. Ayahuasca was regarded as the gateway to the spirit world and Urban Mestizo Shamans believed that being under the influence of Ayachuasca enabled conversations with beings in the spirit world. Ayahuasca ceremonies were frequently held by Curanderos, or witch doctors, to cleanse and holistically purge the body, mind and spirit of affected individuals.

The Effects

The Ayahuasca brew consists of Ayahuasca vine and other plants containing harmala alkaloids with DMT. This special combination is capable of inducing a powerful psychedelic experience because the MAO inhibitor present in the Ayahuasca preserves the DMT. DMT is a psychoactive chemical which produces intense visuals and strong psychedelic effects but is usually rendered ineffective when taken orally because it is easily broken down by the body’s MAO enzyme.

The onset and length of the Ayahuasca experience depends on how recently one has eaten prior to ingesting the Ayahuasca brew. Effects are commonly felt between 20-60 minutes of ingestion with the peak experience lasting for 2-6 hours. There is usually an afterglow period of 1-8 hours that ensues. The Ayahuasca experience consists of audio and visual hallucinations which frequently contain symbolic or emotional significance for the individual.

Preparation

To make the Ayahuasca brew, add a handful of shredded or pounded Ayahuasca with an appropriate DMT carrier to some water and allow to steep. Either the Ayahuasca vine or Ayahuasca bark can be used. After steeping, strain the mixture and drink the tea. This mixture can be boiled to speed up the steeping process.
