Yohimbe Information
Background
Yohimbe is a tree that grows throughout the African nations of Cameroon,
Gabon and Zaire. For centuries, natives from these areas have ingested both the
crude bark and purified compound to enhance sexual prowess and as an
aphrodisiac. The bark has been also smoked as a hallucinogen and has been
used in traditional medicine to treat angina and hypertension. Yohimbe is a
sensual stimulant for healthy men and women. Yohimbe bark contains typically 6%
of the active ingredient called Yohimbine, which was the only medication
approved by the FDA for the treatment of impotence before Viagra hit the market.
Difference between Yohimbe and Viagra
While Viagra may be the medication of choice for plain erectile dysfunction,
Yohimbe has better potential in treating impotence overall. This is the
case because Yohimbine does not just increase blood flow but also increases
sexual desire in both men and women, making those who have ingested it easier to
stimulate mentally, generally more alert.
Dosage
Yohimbe can be smoked or made into a tea. 10 to 15 grams of Yohimbe bark
should be used to aid in alleviating impotence and for increasing sexual desire.
Yohimbe can induce nervousness, anxiety (common with sufficiently large
dosages of Yohimbe/Yohimbine) and difficulty to sleep. Yohimbe should be avoided
by individuals with hypotension (low blood pressure), diabetes and heart, liver
or kidney disease. Symptoms of over dosage include weakness and nervous
stimulation followed by paralysis, fatigue and stomach disorders.
